The Suicide Squad (2021) review. The government sends the most dangerous supervillains in the world — Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Harley Quinn and others — to the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Armed with high-tech weapons, they trek through the dangerous jungle on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Col. Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave.

The Suicide Squad (2021)

Gruesome, Irreverent and witty throughout, The Suicide Squad is a non-stop joyride from start to finish. It was unpredictable and certainly delivered on the endeavour to raise the stakes of the genre, shamelessly killing off a plethora of characters in true James Gunn fashion. The film expertly switches between various tones to create a truly cohesive and full story, juggling heartfelt character moments and thrilling action, graphic violence and intelligent humour with ease and tact, overall producing a special experience for DC fans old and new and truly setting itself apart from the vast roster of copy and paste superhero movies. The cast of the film is vast in number with every member as talented and enjoyable to watch as the last. Notable standouts for me were Peter Capaldi as the joyously evil mastermind, “The Thinker” and of course, Sylvester Stallone as the voice of the simple, lovable, yet feral beast, “King Shark.” As well as this, the returning cast from the 2016 Suicide Squad felt new and invigorated with Gunn’s writing style, yet still retained some connective tissue to past films. This allowed the film to build upon pre-existing lore, enriching the wider DCEU as a whole, whilst simultaneously providing a purely unique and self contained story for the audience to become completely immersed in, without worry of how things tie into other projects. One final thing i feel i must comment on is the design of the film. From each character’s attire seemingly ripped directly from the pages of DC comics, to the unapologetically colourful and outlandish “Starro the Conqueror,” The Suicide Squad felt like a love letter to DC nerds everywhere, willing to engulf its main cast in the wacky regalia of their comic counterparts, where many other films of the genre would typically shy away in favour of tactical jumpsuits and modernised armour. As a big DC fan myself, i found a lot to enjoy in this film and hope to see more comic adapted properties daring to be as bold as this one. In simpler terms, I loved every second of The Suicide Squad and can’t wait to see it again.

The Suicide Squad (2021). You may be wondering whether this is a remake of, or a sequel to, David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad. After all, it’s the exact same DC-comics-based concept (a bunch of incarcerated supervillains must undertake a highly deadly black-ops mission). It even stars several of the same actors, including Margot Robbie as the sociopathic Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as straitlaced team leader Rick Flag, and Viola Davis as cold-hearted boss Amanda Waller. It’s a reasonable question. But one which new writer-director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) answers by effectively saying: ‘Don’t worry about all that. Let’s just have some fun.’ For Gunn, fun constitutes letting rip with some extreme violence that bloodily dispatches many of the movie’s extensive ensemble (the clue is in the title), while keeping the gags coming thick and fast. He positively revels in the inherent silliness of his beloved, dime-store source material. Cinematically, Gunn draws on all the gritty men-on-a-mission war movies of his childhood (The Dirty Dozen, The Guns of Navarone, Where Eagles Dare). Here the setting is a fictional Latin American island, where our antiheroes must shut down an old Nazi research facility. But into this ammo-and-camo setting he gleefully lobs a talking, walking shark (voiced by Sylvester Stallone), a guy infected by multicoloured, cosmic polka dots (David Dastmalchian), a toilet-seat-helmeted vigilante who claims he’d kill any man, woman or child to protect peace (John Cena) and a giant starfish. Named Starro the Conqueror. While this sounds like it could be a lurid, teen-boy-fever-dream mess, Gunn gels it together with a wicked sense of humour and an evident affection for his characters who, though not so endearing as his Guardians of the Galaxy, are a hoot to hang around with. Much like Guardians’ Star-Lord and co, they’re a motley bag of dysfunctional rejects who bicker while they bond. As high-tech mercenary Bloodsport, Idris Elba gives all the manic antics some world-weary grounding, and Stallone’s King Shark is a counter-intuitively lovable, if lethal, lunk. But the show really belongs to Robbie as Harley, on her third outing as the fan-favourite bubblegum psycho. Gunn not only gifts her the best lines, but also the movie’s finest action sequence: a self-contained gun-fu symphony where, in a strikingly lyrical ‘Harley’s mind’s-eye’ touch, brightly petalled flowers tumble where blood should spill. Along its merry, mutilating way The Suicide Squad has something to say about US foreign policy, military ethics and toxic machismo, though you could be forgiven for missing it amid all the explosions and monstrosities. More than anything, it’s a clarion call for the underdog: the idea that even the naffest or nastiest comic-book villain can have a shot at redemption. Considering Gunn’s recent history – he bagged this gig after Disney briefly fired him from Guardians Vol 3 for a bunch of offensive, decade-old tweets – that makes the movie feel oddly personal.

Paul Lynch The Suicide Squad (2021)

The Suicide Squad (2021). “So this is the famous Suicide Squad.” The Suicide Squad is a 2021 action comedy written and directed by James Gunn. Not only did Gunn add a “The” to the semi-sequel/reboot/stand alone outing, but he also added everything that now makes this unmissable entertainment (having been given carte blanche by Warner Bros). It’s fun, features a killer cast, a killer soundtrack, and a script that kills (literally) being both hilarious and gruesome. Similar to the emotional feel of Guardians Of The Galaxy, The Suicide Squad creates a lovable band of a-holes that Gunn gleefully plays with your expectations, and revels in the anarchic narrative he has created. All the cast are great fun to watch on screen with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn getting the big stand out action sequence. The less you know going in the better (be mindful of the tagline “Don’t get too attached”). David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, are exceptional, not only bringing pathos to the proceedings, but also being the instigators of some outlandish surreal moments. The best of the DC films, this demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible and rewards audiences with unhinged carnage, big laughs and real emotional depth. An indie cult classic masquerading as a summer blockbuster, which features the best cinematic shark since “Bruce”. The best fun you’ll have in your local cinema emporium this year. Unless you’re having sex in the self same cinema emporium, and also watching the film Stick around for the two post credits scenes. They are worth the wait.

Anthony Dann The Suicide Squad (2021)

The Suicide Squad’, the soft reboot to the 2016 film, but this time directed by Gunn himself, where he delivers a highly entertaining movie that is bursting with creativity and ultra-violence. James Gunn once again shakes up the superhero formula with a slick style. The first 10-15 minutes tells you exactly what the movie is going to be. I just can’t believe we got something like this. It’s 2 hours and 12 minutes long, but it’s always on the move. It’s bonkers from start till finish, and I enjoyed every minute of it. This is probably one of the best shot movies in the DCU. The soundtrack is great as well and used effectively. The action scenes were insane and made the overall experience one of the most fun I had at the cinema in a long time. Did I mention the movie is very gory? It’s cartoonish violence, or what people call “adult superhero movie”, so it’s not for kiddies or for the faint of heart. You would probably guess that not everybody on the team is going to make it to the end credits, so deaths are to be expected, but how certain characters “bite the dust” are so unexpectedly gruesome and brutal, it took me by surprise each time. The marketing for the movie was right, don’t get too attached. As I said before, James Gunn had complete creative control over the movie, and he doesn’t hold back on what he wrote and show on screen. But then again, it’s a movie, it’s not real, the actors who die on screen are fine in real life…I think. All the cast members have equal amount of time to shine, and you like these super villains this time around, as each character had wonderful chemistry with each other. John Cena plays Peacemaker, an extreme patriot who will do the most horrific things for liberty. John Cena excels in the deadpan line delivery for comedic effect, but surprisingly enough, worked well in the serious moments. Margot Robbie once again nails the role of the chaotic but gleeful Harley Quinn. While the character isn’t front and centre this time around, more of a side character, but whenever the character is on screen, it’s instantly memorable. Idris Elba plays Bloodsport and it’s by far Elba’s best work in a while. Charismatic and a strong leading presence. Polka Dot Man, played by character actor David Dastmalchian, a socially awkward, weird, and lame sounding character that has some serious mummy issues, which has a funny running visual gag throughout. However, because of Gunn’s writing and Dastmalchian’s performance, the character is more than a joke, but a unique character to watch. Ratcatcher 2, played wonderfully by Daniela Melchior, who brought so much warmth and heart to the film. I loved how they tied in her tragic backstory into the finale, as it honestly made me cry. And let’s not forget the king himself, King Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone. He stole every scene he’s in, because he’s so adorable and has such kind eyes, but when he’s hungry, he can be a killing machine.
